We are skiers

Proskida is proud to be based in Canada’s Yukon, a dream playground for outdoor enthusiasts. A typical work day might include a morning or lunchtime ski that can fall under R&D, but we also just really love it.

Proskida is the product of three co-founders who cross country ski as much as our lives and weather lets us. Our desire is to apply our technical background and knowledge to build enhanced training tools for cross country skiing.

Our Team

Alastair Smith

B.Sc., Computer Science

Alastair leads Proskida’s business and software development. His experience with startups includes founding a successful ad agency in Whitehorse and managing a new-media startup in Toronto. This background gave him a real-world understanding of what is involved with running and growing a small company. He has worked with national and international clients on a wide variety of files including sport tourism projects and international sport competitions. An experienced marketer and manager, he handles Proskida’s marketing, finance, partnerships, and customer interaction.

Alastair and his wife are raising a ski-loving family in the Yukon, where he loves every season except for the two mucky weeks between skiing and cycling.

Northmark Ventures

Northmark Ventures is a Canadian high-value add venture firm investing in innovative technology companies across North America. Northmark utilizes its own senior technology team to provide portfolio companies, like Proskida, with an economical, reliable and highly experienced technology development capability which would otherwise take years to develop internally. Northmark is not a standard seed investor, and focuses on supporting highly domain-experienced entrepreneurs in pursuing the solution to difficult technical and business problems.

Rob Rupf

Ph.D. (Candidate) Exercise Physiology

Rob's role is to take all the raw data that comes from our devices and apply some analysis to make it useful to athletes and coaches. This isn't a new role for Rob, he's been helping provincial and national teams understand their training zones and how to build a targeted training program. His skiing background includes coaching (University of Toronto's team with Hans) and providing physiology support for the Thunder Bay National Development Centre.

Rob is one of our poor souls who lives in Toronto and wishes the Martin Goodman Trail was groomed. If that's asking too much, he'd settle for snow.

Hans Fischer

Ph.D., Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology

Hans is Proskida’s resident expert on ski equipment and applies his expertise to design decisions and prototype assembly. As former head coach of the University of Toronto’s varsity Nordic ski team, he remains connected to the ski community and coaching world, and brings a deep understanding of training strategy, technique instruction, and what feedback affects the most change. His experience also extends to early prototyping and building, particularly in medical device development.

Hans envies the rest of the Proskida team members who live where there’s great snow and longer winters. Instead he spends summers sailing and competing in regattas.

Trevor Vaughan

B.Sc., Mechanical Engineering

Trevor is at the helm of our hardware design and production. His passion for new technologies and startup ventures has led him to work in the solar, microelectronics, consumer electronics, and automotive industries. His experience includes manufacturing processes such as die casting, metal forming, injection molding, and advance composites.

Trevor spends some of his free time serving as executive member of Formula North, a non-profit organization which runs a collegiate student racing competition based on the Formula SAE series.

Colin Abbott

B.Sc. Environmental Science

Colin acts as our window into the needs of the athlete.  He provides input on product design, training theory and puts in countless hours testing. He is an active national ranked skier who has skied with the Callaghan Valley Training Centre, XC Ottawa, University of Carleton and the Yukon Elite Squad.

When he's not skiing, he volunteers on the Cross Country Canada board as the Athlete Director.
